Golden Jubilee

The College celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2001. The Golden Jubilee celebrations was inaugurated on 23rd July 2001by ThavathiruKundrakudiPonnamblaAdigalar, who also laid the foundation for the proposed Golden Jubilee Building.  The secular ethos of the college was perceptible by the presence of Most.Rev. Peter Fernando, Bishop of Tuticorin, who presided over the function and Right.Rev. Jeyapaul David, Bishop of Tirunelveli Diocese, both of whom are the renowned Alumni of the college and  Haji FathuRabbani, Secretary, Sathakathullah Appa College who offered felicitations and the also the presence of Dr.R.PerumalSamy, member TNPSC.

As a prelude to the Golden Jubliee Celebrations, a Mini Marathon Race was held on 22nd July 2001.The race was flagged off by S. Jangid. I.P.S., Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli  Range. More the 1200 participants comprising of men and women and boys and girls participated in the race.

As a part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, an Arts and Science Exhibitions was conducted between 13th August, the Memorial Day of our Founder Secretary and 19th August 2001. The Exhibition was declared open by M.Krishnamoorthy, Chairman, Tamilnadu Mercantile Bank and presided over by Thiru. M.Machendranathan, Chairman, TuticorinPort Trust.  The Exhibition was visited by 30,000 students of various colleges and schools in and around Tuticorin and Tirunelveli Districts and 10,000 people across all walks of life.The Exhibition with its varied exhibits displayed by the students was a testimony to the students’ capacity to bridge the gap between the actual  need of life and research and industry and institution.

The Golden Jubilee Celebrations was also abuzz with academic activities like Seminars and Workshops conducted by the departments of Science and Humanities. The details of the academic activities are listed below:

In addition to these Seminars a UGC Sponsored National Level Seminar on  “Exploration, Mininig and Processing of Beach Placer in Indiawas conducted by the Department of Geology on 24th and 15th January 2002. Dr.N.Chandrasekar, Reader in Geology was the Convener. The leading Geologists across the country participated in the Seminar and rendered fruitful deliberations. A National Level Seminar on Information Technology was held on 16th and 17th March 2002 in which Executives from ten leading Computer Software/Hardware Companies including Tata Consultancy Service, Wipro , HCL and  Radiant attended .
            Corollary to the academic activities, an Inter- Collegiate Cultural Contest, Veecofift was also conducted on 11th, 12th and 13th October 2001. Nearly 350students from all affiliated colleges of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University participated in the contest and exhibited their talents.

The Department of Physical Education also conducted many Tournaments to mark the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. They are the Southern Districts Inter Collegiate Foot Ball Tournament which was conducted for three days between 10.09.2001 and 12.09.2001, Basket Ball Tournament that was conducted between 17.09.2001 and 19.09.2001 and Southern Districts Inter-Collegiate Staff Tennis Tournamentconducted  on 23rd and 24th February 2002.

A Special Postal Cover with a Golden Jubilee Logo was released to mark the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. The postal cover was released by Thirumathy Shanthi Nair, Post Master General, Coimbatore  Region and was received by V.O.C.Valceswaran,  son of late V.O.Chidambaram Pillai.

In connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations, a free Eye Camp was organised by the college in association with Aravind Eye Hospital Tirunelveli on August 2001. In the Camp nearly 85 people got free treatment and 40 people undergone free Cataract Operations at Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli.

The celebrations also became an event of Thanksgiving – The Management of the College also a marked a day during  the Valedictory Function to felicitate the retired Teaching and the Non- Teaching members of the college for the tireless service rendered to the college. 

As a token of the service to the society on the mega event of the college, the college NSS students laid a road at KeelaCheithalai with a financial aid of Rs. 15,000 contributed by the college management. As a result, the bus service was resumed to the village after a long gap of ten years.

Having crossed an important  milestone in the annals of the V.O.Chidambaram College, the management placed on record the success of the event to the untiring work of Teaching faculty and the Non-Teaching members of the college and the general public of Tuticorin  District for the unflinching support extended by them.
