The department has a rich tradition of quality research work in various branch of Mathematics. At present the research is being conducted in the following areas :

Department has been upgraded as research centre in the name of S.S.Pillai Centre for research in Mathematics by Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in the year 2008.
The department has produced several researchers of eminence with great scholarships of creative values in different field of the subjects with the Mission in hand to creare a second line of people capable with competance to bear responsibilities in future. The department frequently organises specific seminars aimed at offering significant and land mark results of value and potential for future work to our student and faculty which in turn raises the standard of teaching and education of the subject and prepares them to be capable to collaborate with various other centres.
The PhD program in mathematics provides excellent opportunities for research in the field, either in pure or applied mathematics. Getting admission in the PhD program is not an easy task and one has to score very high in one of the entrance tests prescribed for admission to PhD courses and get into the merit. The PhD program consists of a course work and a dissertation based on original research. To complete the course requirement the students will have to take a certain minimum number of credits. Each course will have some credits and the student will have to select the courses based on that. Following the course work the students have to do some original research under a guide and write a dissertation. A dissertation committee examines the work and undertakes a viva-voce.
