History of the Department

The Tamil Department had more than twelve teachers when the Pre-University course was part of collegiate education. Later with the shedding down of Pre-University class the faculty size dwindled and now only six members are on the staff. Mr. K.N. Sivaramakrishnan had headed the department in the beginning. He was greatly influenced by Tamil Scholars like Tamil Thanthai U.V.Swaminatha Iyer and K.V. Jegannathan. Like them Mr. K.N.S. (as he is affectionately called) endeared himself to the students and also excelled himself in religious orations. He retired from service in 1980.

His successor Mr. A. Jegatheesan, a product of Patchiappa college, Madras is a multifaceted scholar of repute. He was honoured with the title “Kavignar ko”, (King of Poets) by Kundrakudi Adheenam, Thavathiru Kundrakudi Adigalar. He was a creative writer who loved teaching as well as research. Most of his students still fondly remember his classes. He has retired from service and continues to contribute to the enrichment to Tamil culture through periodic public addresses and writings.

Another luminary who served in this department is Mr. Marai Thirunavukarasu. He was the son of the great Tamil Saint Marai Malai Adigalar. Mr. Thirunavukarasu was well versed in Periya puranam and had simplified the life histories of Nayanmars. He also wrote the biography of his father. For this he was awarded a special prize by the then state minister for education Mr. V.R. Nedunchezhian.

Stalwarts like the above were ably supported by Professors K. Chidambarathanu, R.Manickavasagam, A.Thangapandi, A.R. Ponnaiah, P. Sambasivam, S. Pratap Singh and A. Sivasubramanian.

Mr.A.R.Ponnaiah and Mr. P. Sambasivam left the college for better prospects. At this point of time coinciding with lateral changes in Collegiate education, professors like A.Nambinarayanan, A.Pothireddy and Meenakshi Sundaram joined the faculty.

After Mr. A. Jegatheesan, Dr. Pratap Singh, Mr. A. Nambi Narayanan succeeded him. He continues to involve himself in promoting blood donation awareness and is the District coordinator of Red cross society.

Mr. A. Sivasubramanian, superannuated in April 2001. He is well versed in classical studies and also proved himself to be a scholar of established reputation in folklore and historical studies.
