The Department of Physical Education of V. O. Chidambaram College is as old as the institution itself - established when the college was founded in 1951. It has a large playground with facilities for almost all games, two tennis courts and 400 meters standard track. Its latest additions are the flood lit Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium with wooden flooring and accommodation facility for players and officials. It also has a well equipped separate fitness centre for students' with 12 station multi gym, tread mill and modern fitness.

The department has organised numerous tournaments and sports events for Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and various other organisations.
The department has produced innumerable outstanding athletes and sports persons who have gone on to play at the national and state levels many of our alumni represented Madras University in football, volleyball basket ball and athletics, when it was the only university in Tamilnadu. A good number of its athletes have been placed in various public sector undertakings such as railways, ports, banks and armed services. The college has won the overall championship in games several times and also won the overall championship in athletics many times. In 2015-16 the college was the winner and in 2016-17 and 2014-15 it was the runners up in Manonmaniam Sundaranar inter collegiate Overall Championship. The college also has the maximum number of sports persons who represented Manonmnaiam Sundarnar University for several years
